.Dear Network Members, (September 20, 2008)
I attended the funeral service for Dr. Joseph yesterday in Jessup, Maryland. I agreed to speak on the program. Dr. Orlando Lightfoot was in attendance and also spoke. Herb's family was fully represented including his wife, his two daughters, brothers, sister and his mother and father. The Chief of SAMHSA and the Director of CMHS were in attendance and spoke as well. It was a touching and fitting farewell ceremony. There were many wonderful and informative stories of Herb's childhood, his growing up and his time at BMC. The Rev. Dr. J. Anthony Lloyd presided and delivered the eulogy. It was a story from the Bible of a fallen prince whose contributions continued to inspire others after his death. Dr. Lloyd exhorted all in attendance to not just mourn Herb's death, but also to celebrate having had him in our lives. Herb made significant contributions to CMTP, to the Psychology Department of Boston Medical Center and to many Interns over his years at the institution. Our Interns and the program continue to benefit from his contributions even today. Yesterday was not a "glad day" by any stretch of the the imagination for me, but it was not a "sad day" either as I am so thankful that Dr. Herbert M. Joseph, Jr., came my way. Please let's find ways to appreciate each other a little more. Ways for us to be just a little more supportive and forgiving, and to be thankful for all we have and are able to give on this journey through life. In respect and appreciation... ~ Kermit
